Paul's Rock'n'Roll Page

jivers

After much thought, I have decided to close my gig guide. Not to worry, there is a better one here

Another site worth looking at for UK Rock'n'Roll is This one Run by Ian.

Susanne and I both Love the REAL Rock'n'Roll. Contrary to popular belief, There is more to Rock n Roll than "Rock around the clock" and "Blue Suede Shoes" all night, or bright pink drapes, full circle skirts with Poodles and Ankle socks. There are people who wear that gear, but not all of us are like that!

There are lots of different aspects to the music as well. There are many and varied styles within the Rock'n'roll genre, ranging from the straight class Rock'n'roll of people like Bill Haley, through the rockabilly of Billy Lee Riley (featuring Jerry Lee Lewis on Piano!) and the like. Then we can start including Doo-Wop from the likes of The Spaniels

Personally, the important thing for me is the feeling. Rock'n'Roll has got to be played like you mean it! Bands doing the rounds in the UK that I like at the moment include Lucas and the Dynamos (They played at my Wedding) who are straight Rock'n'Roll, but play it how it should be Played - LOUD! The Metrotones - an 8 Piece Doo-Wop Group. These guys led to me meeting my wife. The Hicksville Bombers - A Wild Rock-a-Billy group. The Rimshots - A Hot Rock-a-billy/Skiffle/Country group (with a brilliant CD out - review coming soon!) from Wales. And Finally Sugar Ray's Flying Fortress - a 10 Piece (Yes ten!) Swing band. Fortress also have a CD out - expect a review of that shortly as well.

Recently though, I have been getting a little more into the country side of things - Johhny Horton, Sid King, BR5-49 etc

Surprisingly there is quite a bit of Rockin info out there: Rockhouse records with their searchable database, Nervous records - the label that did a lot to boost Rockabilly in Britain (Hi Roy!). There are bands like Ray Gelato's Giants who are over to the swingier side of things or the Black Eyed Peas. Then there's Raucous Records and Vinyl Japan - the label The Rimshots are signed to, The Vegas weekender - I wish I could go! Tennessee Rhythm Riders who I saw a while ago - they were good then, and I have heard they are much better now Pollytone - they do some of the weekenders, BR5-49 - the hottest modern country on the planet. I saw these guys on March '97 and they blew me away. Bear Family Records Home Page for some serious Quality stuff. Everything I have seen from them is excellent. Flipsville Record Store a record dealer with branches in the states and the UK!

Kenilworth RnR club are on the web as well, so if you are anywhere near Warwickshire, drop in on them.
